Stupid online poker myths sprout from stupid people who think they know everything there is to know about poker. They play a few rounds of online poker at the $0.25/$0.50 limits and, by the snap of a finger, they’re the all-mighty poker gods of information! Then they go spread some silly myths about their so-called strategy, which subsequently ruins other people’s game. Here are some of the worst.
1. You’ll get good cards to start with from online poker rooms just so keep you playing
This is the most radical myth, and that’s why I started out with this one! The rumor is that the online poker rooms will give players on a new table awesome cards. As long as you are given a good start you’ll want to keep playing. This causes people to travel from room to room hoping for awesome hands right away. Cards are handed out from a random number generator so obviously this myth is stupid.
2. Judging someone’s game play from their avatar
This is just horrible! This myth has even made it into some poker strategy articles before. Someone who is a good player wouldn’t want to wear a sign that says “I’m awesome” so why should they be a shark in online poker? Come on now.
3. Reading opponents is the best way to win money in poker.
The myth: pay attention to your opponents – no matter your own cards! This all started when Annette Obrestad made the claim that she won a $4 buy-in 180-person tourney by not looking at her cards. To be honest though, it would be a better decision to play your cards like they are rather than solely going off of reads.
